This weekend I had the opportunity to see one of the members from 6E compete in a gymnastics competition. Each group competed in 5 categories- vault, uneven bars, floor, trampoline, balance beam.

Our classmate came away with FIVE metals- three first place and two second! On trampoline, she got a perfect 6.0!

A Special Surprise!

Reading Game Day!

Every once in a while we have a "Game Day" in our reading group. The different games reinforce important skills we need in order to become better readers.

Opposites Memory: players take turns flipping over two cards.

If they are opposites, they are a match!

Rhyming Houses: Players take turns drawing a card and sorting the words into the correct house.

Matching Sounds: students use stretchy bands to match words that have the same beginning and ending sounds.

"Egg" cellent Facts

In 6-E math, we like to play a little game called "Egg" cellent Facts to help learn basic addition and subtraction facts. It is fun and easy to play at home.

Materials:

2 empty egg cartons
A marker
cotton balls (or other small object)
2 dice

Begin by cutting the top off the egg carton. In each spot write the numbers 1-12...

Players take turns rolling the dice...

They can either add...

Or subtract the numbers they roll...

And use a cotton ball to cover their answer.

If a player notices his opponent has covered a wrong answer, he shouts, "Scrambled Eggs." If he can prove the answer incorrect, he then may take his opponents cotton ball and cover any number on his board.

To play this game with one person, use a timer and see how fast you can cover all of the numbers.

Halloween

Before we left for Safety City, we discussed all different kinds of signs we see that help keep us safe. On the way to Safety City, we spotted many of the signs we talked about!

Once we got to Safety City...

One of our favorite parts of the day was getting put our safety skills to work when we rode the four-wheelers!

After our tour of Safety City we got to spend some time on the playground nearby...

When we arrived back to school, we had an outdoor picnic lunch.

Planting Seeds

Each class in the lower school planted trays of seeds to donate to Real Food Farm.

We counted out three seeds to put in each spot...

Cleaning Small Toys

Over the summer, I like to wash all the toys in my room so they are nice and clean for my new group of students. Our director of facilities gave me the best tip for washing small toys. No more soaking toys in bleach buckets for me! If you are a teacher or mom looking for a quick way to clean small plastic toys like Lego's, blocks, etc. try this great tip!

1. Place small toys in a delicate's bag (that you would use in the washing machine) and zip closed.

2. Place the bag on the top shelf of your dishwasher and run as usual.

3. Empty the toys onto a towel to dry.

The toys are ready for play!

Darling Dolls Camp- Week 1

Mrs. Armstrong and I had a fantastic first week at Darling Dolls Camp!

It was so fun getting know each of our 13 campers.

Each day the girls had a different "doll project" to create.

First, they decorated a box to store all their treasures...

The campers used decorative paper, gems, and stencils to make paper dolls...

On Tuesday, we had a very special guest.

Ms. Pinkard came to share her love of paper dolls with the campers.

On Tuesday, we made paper flower fairies...

On Wednesday, we made Russian nesting dolls that look like our families!

The girls also each made a picture frame to remember camp.

And of course there was plenty of time...

to PLAY with our dolls!

Washington D.C.

To kick off the summer, I am so excited to have my three youngest siblings come for a visit! On one of their first days here we decided to get together with some close friends and take a day trip to Washington D.C.

First, we went to the Natural History Museum .

My favorite part was looking at all the fossils and dinosaurs.

I also got to hold a grasshopper.

(notice the very unusual creatures hiding in the plants :) )

Next, we went to the Lincoln Memorial.

Multiplication Arrays

In 8th Age math, we have been wrapping up the year learning about multiplication. One way to help students visualize multiplication facts is to have them make arrays.

This array shows 3 rows of 4, or 3 x 4 = 12

The students were challenged to work together and see how many arrays they could make for a given number. They used graph paper to record the results.

3-D Glasses

Here is how you can make 3-D glasses:

You will need:

- poster board

- glasses stencil

- pencil

- scissors

- hole punch

- glue stick

- red and blue acetate

First, trace the stencil onto the poster board.

If you want to change the shape of your glasses, use a pencil to make your design.

Carefully cut your glasses.

Use a hole punch to make two holes in the eyes.

Insert your scissors into the hole and carefully cut out the rectangles.

Use a glue stick to attach the red and blue acetate.

Make sure the red is on the left and the blue is on the right.

Finally, fold the sides and enjoy!

Draw a Picture to Solve a Problem

While individuals of the Calvert community may not be familiar with me, I grew up in the Roland Park area, graduated from Bryn Mawr in 2009, and am quite familiar with Calvert, having a lot of friends who made up the first graduating 8th grade class. My older sister also graduated from Bryn Mawr, and then graduated from Emory University in 2010, and is current doing psychology research at Hopkins. My older brother attended Gilman for high school, graduated from WashU in St. Louis in '08, majoring in mechanical engineering, and is currently working for Whiting and Turner in DC. My father is a cardiologist at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, and my mother is a pediatrician at Main Street Pediatrics in Towson. I am currently a rising junior at Duke University majoring in Public Policy, minoring in Dance, and pursuing a certificate in Arts of the Moving Image (film). I will be studying abroad in the fall at Cape Town South Africa, doing a fields study Multiculturalism and Human Rights program.

I started dancing at the age of six, training at Towson University's Children's Dance Division through high school. I have formal training in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Tap, and Point. I participated in multiple dance troupes through TUCDD as well as through BMS, putting on shows in the community. Starting in middle school, I attended various summer dance intensives including the Joffrey Ballet School, Point Park University, and Steps on Broadway. I began choreographing for Bryn Mawr's middle and upper school dance companies at the age of 15. I spent my '08 and '09 summers teaching dance at a sleep away camp in West Virginia. Last summer I was an intern in NYC at Broadway Dance Center and am currently training under Duke's Dance Program, as well as choreographing for my student run dance group, "defMo". I spent the past semester choreographing and running rehearsals for myself and a group of eleven other Duke dancers who were chosen to put on an hour long dance show for the 2011 Summer University Olympics which will be held in Shenzhen, China this August.

I am so excited for this summer as I have to opportunity to teach and share my passion of dance with the Baltimore community in June and then will be in China from mid-July through August, representing dance in America on an international stage.

Real Food Farm

Real Food Farm is an amazing organization, located on six acres of land in Clifton Park, that provides fresh, healthy food to Baltimore families. Today, Calvert School and Constellation Energy families had the opportunity to volunteer at the farm. Together we were able to raise two hoop houses, which extend the growing season into the colder months, allowing the farm to produce more crops.

Spring is Here!

Game 1- BMS

Today was our first lacrosse game. With over a week off from practice, I had to admit I was more than a little anxious to see how the game would unfold. My concerns quickly grew as we were down 6-0. Finally, with 8 minutes left in the first half, we scored our first goal... and then another, and another! Things were staring to turn around. We ended the first half 8-3.

During halftime we talked about our defense needing to get loud and be intimidating and our offense needing to pass and move. The girls were motivated and determined. We knew the game was not over.

Watching the second half was like watching a new game! The girls quickly found their rhythm. In a little over five minutes we raised the score to 8-6. When the score was 8-7 BMS brought on the heat and scored three more goals. We had a great response with three more ourselves. The game ended at 11-10. Although it wasn't a win, the girls made huge improvements from the first half to the second. What a great comeback! I can't wait for the rematch on April 26th!

Darling Dolls Camp

"Oo" Week

On Monday, I read my Pilot language arts group the Alphatales, Olive the Octopus's Day of Juggling.

This is a great book for beginning readers because of it's repetitive, predictive text.

On Wednesday, we looked at the key vocabulary from the story. These are the words that repeat throughout the book.

The students worked together to find and highlight the key vocabulary in their small books.

On Thursday, as we reread the book, the students were in charge of reading the key vocabulary.

On Friday, we took turns reading the book together.

I am so proud of these emerging readers!

The First Day of Practice

It was important to gather a variety of leaves to create an interesting pattern. It was also important to get a couple of each leaf because, as one student reminded us, "patterns repeat!"

Make 10 "Go Fish"

One important skill we learn in 7th Age is the different ways to make ten. Quickly recognizing the sums of ten will help students later, when they are adding larger numbers.

One way students can learn the sums of ten is the "Sums of Ten Rainbow."

The numbers 0-10 are across the bottom. Each color of the rainbow matches two numbers that equal ten- 0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5.

A fun way to memorize the pairs is to play "Make Ten Go Fish." It is similar to traditional "Go Fish," but instead of trying to find matching cards, players try to find pairs that add up to ten.

Each player is dealt two cards. All the remaining cards are placed in a pile, face down.

Player one asks a friend, "Do you have a ___?" They are looking for a "sum of ten." So, if they are dealt a six, they would ask for a four. If the friend has the card, they give it to player one and it is the next persons turn.

If they do not have the card, the friend says, "Go fish!" and player one draws a card from the pile.

Players take turns until all the cards have a match. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.

Addition With Regrouping

In order for students to grasp math concepts and be able to apply them to more advanced problems, it is important that students not just follow procedures to solve a problem. Since everyone will think about a problem a little differently, there are many ways to solve the same problem! Today we were solving the problem 29 + 16. Here are two solutions we discovered.

Operation Shower

Operation Shower is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that recognizes and honors the sacrifices military families make by coordinating unit-wide baby showers for pregnant or expecting military families in a deployment or high stress situation. As part of this year's Constellation Energy Senior Players' Championship--a major of the PGA Tour, PGA players' wives and Constellation wives will be hosting a shower at Walter Reed Medical Center on Wednesday, October 6 for 50 women and their families--all of whom have husbands who have been badly injured in the war and are patients at Walter Reed. Constellation employees and wives are arranging a number of surprises for the families--including a package of diapers--and Kmart has agreed to donate items as well.

Our 8th Age math group helped prepare the ribbon needed to make the diaper cake decorations.

Each group worked together to measure and cut the three ribbons needed to make one decoration.

They checked to make sure the measurements were accurate.

The students were really excited to help out for this event!

Step 1: Make game pieces by cutting and glueing numbers and number words onto construction paper.

Step 2: Carefully cut out each game piece and turn upside down.

Step3: Take turns flipping over two cards to see if they match.

Step 4: If you find a number and number word that are the same, that is a pair!

The player with the most pairs wins.

A Place for Zero

Our math group read the book, A Place for Zero. This story is about the lonely digit, Zero, trying to find his place in the land of Digitaria. Just like letters make words, digits make numbers. Some numbers can have one digit, while others can have many digits. Depending on where the digit is placed, the number changes value. A 1 in the tens place, like in 12, is very different that a 1 in the hundreds place, like in 120.

The First Day of School

Yesterday was a wonderful first day of school. It is always such an exciting time of year. I was lucky enough to be outside to greet all the families as they arrived. Everyone was smiling and ready to start the new school year. I love watching all of the proud parents taking pictures and watching their children walk into school. It must be an amazing feeling to let go of your little one's hand and allow them to become more independent... Maybe a little scary, too. Thank you for trusting us with your children. We are so privileged to get to spend each day with them, getting to know them, watching them grow and learn. I am so thankful for all the great families we have at Calvert.
